The coordination between government agencies and major social media companies has resumed this year to tackle foreign disinformation and influence operations in the lead-up to the U.S. presidential election. Recent actions taken by the companies to remove malicious content have been reported by the Biden administration and company officials. The communication between the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the companies was interrupted last year due to a legal challenge. With the challenge rejected, the limits on the government’s ability to combat online misinformation remain unclear. The resumption of communication comes as Russia and Iran increase efforts to interfere in the election.
