Americans are facing a housing affordability crisis, with high rent prices and the difficulty of buying a home. The problem is mainly caused by low housing supply and high demand, which surged during the pandemic and has remained high. Vice President Kamala Harris has unveiled a plan to make homes more affordable, including down-payment support, tax credits for first-time homebuyers, incentives for builders, and an innovation fund for housing construction. However, some economists are concerned that the plan may exacerbate market problems, particularly rent caps and down-payment support that could increase demand and prices. The critical part of the plan is the proposal to add 3 million housing units to address the supply shortage. Both Harris and former President Donald Trump have proposed repurposing federal land to alleviate the housing shortage. The importance and challenges of implementing such plans are still uncertain.
