Federal safety regulators are investigating whether Tesla’s recall of 2 million vehicles in December was sufficient to address the safety concerns related to its ‘Autopilot’ feature. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had ordered the recall over a software update aimed at limiting the use of Autopilot after a two-year probe found that the feature can give drivers a false sense of security. The NHTSA also raised concerns about the misuse of the technology in dangerous situations. Tesla’s recall requires the owner to opt in, which is now being evaluated by the NHTSA. The investigation comes as Tesla faces scrutiny over its efforts to market its cars as capable of autonomous driving.
