More people who still use telephone landlines will soon need to decide if they want to hang up on their service. AT&T and Verizon have applied to stop servicing traditional landlines in California, as part of a move to replace older copper wire-based telephone systems with faster and more advanced technology. This shift towards fiber optics and ethernet access is also happening in France and the UK. Consumers will need to choose between giving up their landlines or facing potentially higher costs for alternatives that may not be as reliable. The process of switching to new equipment could be challenging. The change is expected to impact people over 65 and small business owners the most.
