UN maternity aid looted in Port-au-Prince as Haiti crisis deepens
A container carrying essential items for newborn babies and their mothers was looted in Port-au-Prince amid escalating gang violence and a worsening humanitarian crisis. The looted container contained resuscitators, maternity and neonatal supplies, early childhood development and education equipment, and water equipment. More than 260 humanitarian-owned containers at the port are now controlled by armed groups. The theft of these supplies is a severe blow as it occurs when children are in dire need of them. Haiti’s healthcare system is collapsing, with limited access to basic public health and nutrition. The violence continues, with police carrying out operations to combat armed gangs. Haiti is facing a political and humanitarian crisis, with a significant portion of Port-au-Prince under gang control. The violence and blockades are causing shortages of food, fuel, and medical supplies. The situation is a humanitarian catastrophe that needs urgent attention.
